Delivering Preventive Healthcare to the Community

The screening camp aimed to bring preventive healthcare and early detection services closer to the people of Kunwar Pala and surrounding communities in Mayurbhanj. The programme provided participants with access to cancer screening, NCD assessment, health awareness, and personalised counselling in a community-based setting.

The camp included screening and health assessment activities covering NCDs, oral health, and breast health. Participants were registered and relevant information was collected before the screening procedures. Informed consent was obtained wherever required before cancer screening activities.

The initiative emphasised the importance of identifying potential health abnormalities at an early stage and encouraging individuals to seek timely medical evaluation whenever required.

Awareness and Health Education

Health awareness was a key focus of the camp. Participants learned about the significance of regular health check-ups, cancer prevention, early warning signs, and adopting healthy lifestyle habits.

The healthcare team highlighted common risk factors associated with cancer and NCDs, including tobacco use, alcohol consumption, unhealthy dietary habits, physical inactivity, and poor oral hygiene.

Participants were encouraged to maintain good oral hygiene, remain alert to unusual changes in the mouth or breast, and seek professional medical advice whenever they noticed persistent or suspicious symptoms.

NCD Screening and Assessment

NCD screening was an important component of the community health initiative. The team conducted 135 NCD assessments as part of the screening activities.

The assessment aimed to raise awareness of common non-communicable diseases and the importance of regular health monitoring. Participants were encouraged to understand their individual health risks and adopt healthier lifestyle practices.

Through community-level NCD screening and awareness, Swasthyarekha continues to support preventive healthcare and encourage individuals to take proactive steps to maintain their health.

Oral Cancer Screening

Oral health screening was another important component of the Kunwar Pala camp. A total of 135 participants underwent Oral Visual Observation (OVA), while 43 participants received additional screening with the Oral Scan device.

The screening involved an examination of the oral cavity for visible abnormalities or suspicious lesions. Oral Scan technology was used to support digital documentation and assessment of oral findings.

During the screening process, no suspected oral abnormalities were identified. Participants were nevertheless counselled on maintaining good oral hygiene, avoiding tobacco and other risk factors, and seeking medical attention if they notice persistent or unusual changes in the oral cavity.

Breast Cancer Screening

Breast cancer awareness and screening were also offered as part of the community screening activities.

A total of 76 Clinical Breast Examinations (CBE) were conducted, while 35 participants were additionally screened using the BR Scan device, an AI-enabled breast screening technology designed to support the identification of suspicious abnormalities.

The screening identified no suspected breast abnormalities. Participants were counselled on breast health awareness, the importance of regular health checks, and the need to seek professional medical advice if they notice any unusual breast-related changes.

Personalised Counselling and Follow-Up

Following the screening procedures, participants received counselling based on their individual health assessments and identified risk factors.

Although the screening found no suspected oral or breast abnormalities, participants were encouraged to continue regular health check-ups and adopt healthy lifestyle practices to reduce preventable health risks.

The screening team also emphasised that screening is an important preventive measure and that individuals should seek appropriate medical evaluation whenever they experience persistent or concerning symptoms.

Why Community-Based Screening Matters

Community-based screening programmes help bring preventive healthcare services closer to individuals who may face barriers to accessing specialised healthcare facilities.

By conducting screening activities in Kunwar Pala, Mayurbhanj, Swasthyarekha helped create a convenient community-based setting where people could access cancer awareness, NCD assessment, screening, and health counselling.

Early identification of suspicious abnormalities can support timely referral and further evaluation, making community-based screening an important part of preventive healthcare.

ThePath Forward

The Kunwar Pala community screening camp reflects Swasthyarekha’s ongoing commitment to strengthening community healthcare through awareness, early detection, screening, and preventive health education.

The initiative also highlights the importance of collaborating with community organisations, such as Yuva Vikash Foundation, to expand access to preventive healthcare services.

Swasthyarekha will continue to expand its community outreach initiatives across Odisha, bringing preventive healthcare and early cancer detection services closer to more communities.
