Bringing Early Cancer Screening Closer to Home: Swasthyarekha’s Camp 19 at Nuapatna

Bringing Early Cancer Screening Closer to Home: Swasthyarekha’s Camp 19 at Nuapatna

For many families, preventive healthcare starts with a simple opportunity: the chance to check their health before a concern becomes difficult to treat. On 6 October 2026, Swasthyarekha, in association with Yuva Vikash Foundation, Balasore, conducted its 19th community health screening camp at Nuapatna, Cuttack, Odisha.

The camp brought non-communicable disease (NCD) assessment, oral cancer screening, and breast cancer screening directly to the community, allowing residents to access preventive healthcare in a familiar and convenient setting.

Camp 19 at a Glance

  • Date: 6 October 2026
  • Location: Nuapatna, Cuttack, Odisha, India
  • In association with: Yuva Vikash Foundation, Balasore
  • Total Participants: 64
  • NCD Screening: 64
  • Oral Visual Assessment (OVA): 64
  • oral Scan Screening: 23
  • Clinical Breast Examination (CBE): 42
  • BR Scan Screening: 27

A Complete Health Check Begins with NCD Screening

The screening process began with NCD assessments for all 64 participants. The health team checked important health indicators associated with common non-communicable diseases, helping participants better understand their current health status.

Combining NCD assessment with cancer screening made the camp more comprehensive. It also reinforced the importance of regular health monitoring, even when no noticeable symptoms are present.

Oral Screening: 64 Examined, 23 Screened Using Oral Scan

Oral health was an important focus of the camp. All 64 participants underwent an Oral Visual Assessment (OVA), during which the screening team examined the oral cavity for visible changes or abnormalities.

Of these participants, 23 also underwent screening using the OralScan device. This technology-assisted screening complemented the visual assessment and supported a more structured approach to oral health screening.

Breast Screening: 42 Clinical Examinations and 27 BR Scans

Breast health screening was another key component of the camp. A total of 42 participants underwent Clinical Breast Examination (CBE), a physical examination performed by the health team.

Of these participants, 27 also underwent screening using the BR Scan device, adding a technology-assisted assessment alongside the clinical examination.

Technology Supporting Community-Based Screening

Devices such as OralScan and BR Scan support Swasthyarekha’s approach of bringing technology-assisted screening services closer to communities.

At Nuapatna, these tools were used alongside clinical examinations rather than as replacements for professional assessment. Combining visual assessment, clinical examination, and device-based screening supports a more structured approach to identifying participants who may require further evaluation.

Most importantly, screening is only the first step. Participants with concerning findings should receive timely follow-up and appropriate diagnostic evaluation.

Why Community Screening Matters

The Nuapatna camp demonstrates how preventive healthcare services can reach people within their own communities. When screening services are made available locally, practical barriers to routine health check-ups, such as travel, cost, and hesitation about visiting a hospital, may become easier to overcome.

For the 64 participants who attended the camp, the initiative provided an opportunity to access NCD assessment and cancer screening in a single visit, without having to begin the process at a hospital.

From Screening to Follow-Up

Screening does not end on the day of the camp. Participants whose results indicate a need for further assessment should be guided towards appropriate clinical evaluation and follow-up.

All participants should also be encouraged to remain aware of their health, understand the importance of regular screening, and seek medical advice whenever they notice concerning symptoms.

Through this approach, Swasthyarekha aims to foster a culture in which screening becomes a routine part of preventive healthcare rather than something people seek only after symptoms appear.

Taking Early Detection Across Communities

With its 19th camp, Swasthyarekha continues to bring preventive healthcare services closer to the people who need them, one community at a time.

The Nuapatna camp was made possible through the support of Yuva Vikash Foundation, Balasore, and the participation of the local community. Each screening contributes to a broader goal: raising awareness, encouraging timely medical attention, and making early detection a more accessible part of everyday healthcare.

Early Detection. Better Care. Healthier Communities.
