Delivering Preventive Healthcare to the Community

The screening camp began early in the morning with the objective of making quality healthcare services accessible to people in Balasore. By bringing advanced screening technology and experienced healthcare professionals closer to the community, the camp encouraged early cancer detection and promoted preventive health practices.

A total of 65 participants attended the camp and underwent comprehensive health assessments. Each participant was registered and provided demographic information, medical history, lifestyle details, and relevant risk factors before screening. Written informed consent was obtained before any cancer screening procedures were conducted.

In addition to cancer screening, all participants received Non-Communicable Disease (NCD) assessments, including measurement of blood pressure, blood sugar, height, weight, oxygen saturation, pulse rate, and Body Mass Index (BMI), enabling them to better understand their overall health status.

Awareness and Health Education

The camp focused not only on screening but also on educating the community about cancer prevention and early detection. Participants received awareness sessions on the importance of regular screening, healthy lifestyle practices, and the early warning signs of oral and breast cancer.

Healthcare professionals highlighted major risk factors such as tobacco use, alcohol consumption, unhealthy diet, physical inactivity, and poor oral hygiene. Practical guidance on maintaining good oral health, performing breast self-examinations, and adopting healthier lifestyle habits was also provided.

Oral Cancer Screening

Participants underwent oral cancer screening using advanced Oralscan technology, which enables digital documentation and AI-assisted assessment of oral lesions.

A total of 35 participants were screened using the Oral scan device. Each examination included assessment of the lips, tongue, cheeks, gums, palate, and other oral tissues for suspicious lesions or abnormalities.

Participants were counselled regarding their screening findings and advised on the importance of periodic follow-up screening, especially those with tobacco-related risk factors.

Breast Cancer Screening

Women attending the camp received counselling regarding breast cancer awareness and the importance of routine screening.

A total of 30 women underwent Clinical Breast Examination (CBE), while 25 participants were additionally screened with the BR Scan device, an AI-enabled breast screening technology designed to support the early identification of suspicious abnormalities.

During screening, 2 participants were identified with suspected breast abnormalities. They were counselled individually and referred for further diagnostic evaluation and specialist consultation to confirm the findings and ensure timely management.

Personalised Counselling and Follow-Up

Every participant received individual counselling based on their health assessment and screening results. Those identified with risk factors were encouraged to adopt healthier lifestyle practices, while participants requiring additional medical evaluation were informed about the next steps for diagnosis and treatment.

Educational materials on cancer prevention, healthy living, and the importance of regular screening were distributed to help extend awareness beyond the camp itself.

Why Community-Based Screening Matters

Community-based screening camps play a vital role in reaching individuals who may not otherwise have easy access to specialised healthcare services. Conducting the programme at Balasore Club provided a convenient and familiar environment where people could receive preventive healthcare without travelling long distances.

Early detection remains one of the most effective strategies for reducing cancer-related mortality. Screening programmes like this support national efforts under the National Programme for Prevention and Control of Non-Communicable Diseases (NPCDCS) by encouraging timely diagnosis and improving community awareness.

The Path Forward

The success of the Balasore screening camp reinforces Swasthyarekha's commitment to strengthening community healthcare through awareness, early detection, and timely referral.

The immediate priority is to ensure proper follow-up for the two participants with suspected breast abnormalities, facilitating confirmatory diagnosis and appropriate medical care. Swasthyarekha will continue expanding its outreach initiatives to bring advanced cancer screening services to more communities across Odisha.
